SHORT OVERVIEW
The Shadows is a social drama that offers multiple meanings and arguments. It will be, in the strictest sense, a cultural values, identity with integration problem of present-day inner- city Oslo. The Shadows will extent beyond by breaking new ground, it will do so because of larger, universal themes that have more to do with human condition, the nature of the city of Oslo and, indeed, the norwegian's culture.
WHY WE WANT TELL THIS STORY.
The Shadows has a huge potential to reach out to many people around the world due to the storyline and the messages that will spike a household discussion among all race of people and their surroundings. It’s a modern days story that speaks on cultural identity and integration crisis, so we strongly believe, now is the right time to tell this story because it has a huge meaning on the Norwegian society. Every topic has its time, and every time tells its stories, we can’t ignore the fact how the Norwegian society and culture has changed over the past years due to newcomer settling in Norway, especially Oslo, which we want base our storyline on.
MAIN CHARACTERS
BOAKAI TAMBA: is a well-educated, mid 20, African migrant, tall, well-built who is disillusioned with his new life in Oslo. He escaped the long harship in Africa and, when the series begins, has recently had his asylum application rejected. While he is imaginative and intelligent, Boakai has lost a big part of his youth to hardship. As such, he has a less developed, idealized view of his new home in Oslo. His move to Norway is motivated less by realistic vision but more by a misplaced notion of a land of milk and honey, where all ambition is realized. He moves in the shadows of different people to survive.
KEVIN AUSTAD, the early 30s, Caucasian male, Boakai’s friend and flat mate has had a very hard knock past. His teenage years of wrong path still haunt him. As such, he is a stranger, an outcast in his own community. Kevin finds in Boakai someone with whom he can belong, a stranger with whom he can relate. Kevin and Boakai strike a warm, race-transcending friendship. Kevin is determined to stay on the straight and narrow in order to foster a meaningful relationship with his estranged eight-year-old daughter.
NICOLE HERBORG, the late (20s) is a beautiful Caucasian female Human Rights lawyer. Headstrong, open-minded and somewhat feminist. She is Boakai’s lawyer, she strongly believes there is many holes in Boakai’s asylum case and he should have the right to stay in Norway. She makes a decision to fight his case.
In the process of fighting his case both of them create affection for each other. She and Boakai play off one another: he imposing his “traditional” African values on her, she resisting; She imposing her “evolved” Norwegian middle-class values and modern gender sensibilities on him, he resists. Before long a deeply affectionate relationship, tempered by intellectual tension and argument, develops between Nicole and Boakai.
SAID YUSEF (20s), from Somalia, smart, the oldest brother of two siblings, lives at home. Said Yusef lives for the family and does his best to support his single mother and his little brother. He is an aspiring actor and is determined to land a lead role someday. He reluctantly peddles narcotics for some friends out of loyalty and to supplement his unemployment benefits. His acting career is not on the right path due to the film industry which has less role for minority actors, he has tried on many auditions but no green light. In many tryers, a lead role is offer to Said to play a gay lover. He stands between his acting career and his culture to make a decision.
OMAR NASER (30s)is of middle eastern descent, runs a local grocery store. Omar is the epitome of a private person. Little bit integrated into the society, he respects his own culture a lot. He’s a boyfriend to Hege, in fact, only a handful of his customers are Norwegian. Omar has lived in Norway for few years, the majority of his acquaintances in the area are of migrant backgrounds and know a few white Norwegians. You will be sure to find Omar at his shop seven days a week. He is also known within his community. He loves his girlfriend Hege and his step-daughter Neah but doesn’t see eye to eye with Kevin, who is ex-boyfriend to Hege.
HEGE BJØRKE is a Caucasian female (30s), social worker and Kevin Austad's ex-girlfriend with whom she has an eight years old daughter, Neah. She runs a mentorship program in the community for youth with minority background. On the whole, she is very well known and loved in the community for her dedication to social service. Her previous and current relationship, a girlfriend and now parent, with “rotten-tomatoes” Kevin, remains open to interpretive discourse.
