Motivation

• Millions of tonnes of waste are generated globally. Items that are nearly new, still functional, or easily fixable are still being thrown away - It should be simpler and more rewarding to give away items than to throw them away. It should be as simple to find the used items you need as it is to buy new.
• Massive amounts of tools and gears live in homes that seldom need them - It should be easy to set up sharing options in local communities.

Goal

The ultimate goal is to catalogue and make easily available the world’s free items so that they can be reused by anyone for free. Imagine having access to the content of hundreds of thousands of mini-libraries and reuse centres through your smartphone! The app is also a sharing platform for local communities, providing easy access to tools and gears in your neighbourhood. The app will contribute to global sustainability by maximising the use of each item, reducing waste, and minimizing the need for privately-owned tools. It will help redistribute material wealth from those who have plenty to those who have less. The apps social functionality encourage meetings between people and creates interesting stories unique to each item.

How much is needed?

Ideally, I would like to engage a Norwegian company because it is important to have close contact with the developers throughout the project. But developing a release-ready cross-platform (Android and Ios) mobile application is expensive. A well-known Norwegian company estimated 875.000-1,200.000 NOK and 6-9 months of development. However, developing abroad could probably lower the cost to about 500.000 NOK, which I have set as the minimum target. It's an ambitious goal, but that is what's needed to succeed. Therefore this is an all-or-nothing campaign. If the target is not reached, you will automatically get your money back within a week after the campaign has ended.

Is there any interest in this kind of app?

There are similar web services dedicated entirely to books[1,2] and the interest in giving away any useful item is much larger[3]. Together there are millions of users around the world.

Are there other mobile apps like this?

The app stores are full of apps where people can buy and sell, or rent used items. There are also apps where people can give away items. However, many suffer from poor user experience and functionality, being limited geographically or by language, or not reaching a critical mass of users. I believe development cost and complexity are important reasons. As there is no profitability for this kind of app, they are often developed by single individuals that lack the money and capacity to create an app working seamlessly on thousands of different device types. To my knowledge, there is currently no widespread app that matches the functionality planned in this project.

Why will this app succeed?

The app will be high quality, available for free, extremely easy to use, including accessibility features, released globally on Android and Ios, and support 10+ languages from day one (including Norwegian). All items will be completely free, there will be no selling or buying. The app will be ethical, transparent, and will never sell personal information. The long-term goal is to make it open-source. Novel features like tracking items and visualising the unique history of each item give an edge over similar apps.

Do you have the qualifications, persistence and determination to deliver?

I am Oskar Hansson, a forensic geneticist with a special interest in programming. During my PhD, I programmed open-source software that is used around the world. However, I have always had a passion for the environment. The basic idea for this mobile app emerged more than ten years ago. Determined to realise the idea, I completed multiple courses in data science, Java programming, and Android application programming. During my paternity leave in 2017, I programmed a crude prototype. Then I stepped into a demanding leadership position while finalising the PhD. After work, I spend time with my family and there is simply no room for programming anymore. Realising that I couldn't complete the project on my own, I contacted a university in Malmö, Sweden. In 2018 a simplified version of the project was taken on by six competent students which produced an Android app with about half the functionality. Now it's time to turn to professionals and this is why I need your help!

The money raised will be deposited in the ethically topp-ranked bank Cultura Bank. All money will then be used to engage a reputable company with professional programmers in the development of the proposed mobile app.

Secured by the Norwegian national BankID authority

Spleis is the largest crowdfunding website in Norway, which uses the Norwegian national BankID authority to securly identify the campaigner "Identifisert med BankID".

How to donate step-by-step

Note: if the target amount of the campaign is not reached the money will be automatically returned within a week after the campaign ends. Therefore, you can be confident that your contribution goes into the development of the mobile application.

1. Click the turquoise button “Støtt spleisen” or “Støtt” which means support the campaign. Alternatively scroll down to the bottom of the page.

There are multiple options to contribute. The first choice “Gi et valgfritt beløp” means to give an optional amount. There are also four choices with predefined amounts of 50 kr, 500 kr, 5 000 kr, and 50 000 kr (all in NOK). These are "Belønninger" or rewards specified for the campaign. 

2. Then click the “Velg” button of your choice. Let’s say you select the “I want to make a difference!” reward.

3. After clicking “Velg” you will be shown the pay page. The defined minimum reward limit is prefilled but the amount can be changed. In this example we type in 5 001 kr (note: if more than 5 000 kr is donated the crowdfunding platform give you the additional benefit of having your name and logo appear at the front page of the campaign). There are three options to pay but only “Kort”, which means card, is available from outside of Norway. Click the “Kort” button.

4. A window is shown. Fill inn the obligatory information card details or “Kortdetaljer” and email address. Below the email address field is explained that the email address is used to send you a receipt and as contact information for the reward. Select to either write a message “Legg igjen en hilsen på spleisen” or to be anonymous “Jeg vil være anonym”. When selecting to write a message, new fields appear. Write your name or business in the field “Ditt navn” and optionally your message in the field “Legg igjen en hilsen (valgfritt)”. Click the button “Betal” to pay.

When the payment is completed successfully a confirmation is shown with the message "Thank you for supporting the campaign! The payment is registered and we have sent you a receipt to your email".

In addition, at the front page on the activities timeline “Aktivitet” tab, located directly below the status bar, your name and message will be shown.

How to update with your name and logo or picture when donating more 5 000 kr

You have received an email receipt of the payment that says something like “You can appear among large donors on the collection for the amount you have given. By appearing as a large donor of the campaign the amount you have given, along with a name and photo of your choice, will be displayed on the campaign. For a company, for example, it will be natural to show the company name and logo together with the amount.” Click the button “Legg til navn og bilde” to add your name and picture.

After clicking the button you are taken to a form where you can change your name “Ditt navn” and optional message “Melding (valgfritt)”. Leave the name field empty to remain anonymous. Important, check the checkbox to be displayed on the front page of the campaign. Click the round picture space to upload your photo or company logo. Click the button “Endre” to update the picture.

Appen er også en delingsplattform for lokalsamfunn, som gir enkel tilgang til verktøy og utstyr i nabolaget ditt. Hvor mye trengs?

Ideelt ønsker jeg å benytte en norsk bedrift da det er viktig å ha tett kontakt med utviklerne gjennom hele prosjektet. Men å utvikle en ferdig applikasjon som fungerer på både Android og Ios er dyrt. Et velkjent norsk selskap ga et estimat på 875.000-1.200.000 kr og 6-9 måneders utvikling. Ved å utvikle i utlandet kan kostnaden sannsynligvis reduseres til ca 500.000 kr, hvilket jeg har satt som mål for innsamlingen. Det er et ambisiøst mål, men det er hva som kreves for å lykkes. Derfor er dette en alt-eller-ingenting-kampanje. Hvis målet ikke nåes vil pengene automatisk betales tilbake i løpet av en ukes tid etter at spleisen er avsluttet.

Er det noen interesse for denne typen app?

Det finnes lignende web-tjenester dedikert utelukkende til bøker[1,2] men interessen for å gi bort ting er mye større[3]. Sammen er det millioner av brukere over hele verden.

Finnes det andre lignende mobilapper?

Appbutikkene er fulle av apper der folk kan kjøpe og selge brukte ting. Det er også apper der folk kan gi bort ting. Imidlertid er mange lite brukervennlige og har dårlig funksjonalitet, er begrenset geografisk eller av språk, eller når ikke en kritisk masse av brukere. Jeg tror utviklingskostnader og kompleksitet er viktige årsaker. Siden det ikke er lønnsomhet for denne type app, er de ofte utviklet av enkeltpersoner som mangler økonomi og kapasitet til å lage en app som fungerer sømløst på tusenvis av forskjellige mobiler. Så vidt jeg vet er det foreløpig ingen utbredt app som har tilsvarende funksjonalitet som er planlagt i dette prosjektet.

Hvorfor vil denne appen lykkes?

Appen vil være av høy kvalitet, gratis, ekstremt enkel å bruke, inkludert tilgjengelighetsfunksjoner, utgitt globalt på Android og Ios, og støtte 10+ språk fra første dag (selvfølgelig inkludert norsk). Alle tingene vil være gratis, det blir ikke salg eller kjøp. Appen vil være etisk, gjennomsiktig og vil aldri selge personlig informasjon. Det langsiktige målet er åpen kildekode. Innovative funksjoner som å spore og visualisere den unike historien til hver ting gir en fordel i forhold til lignende apper.

Har du kvalifikasjonene, utholdenhet og besluttsomheten til å fullføre?

Jeg er Oskar Hansson, en retts-genetiker med en stor interesse for programmering. I løpet av doktorgraden utviklet jeg programvare med åpen kildekode som brukes av faginstitusjoner over hele verden. Jeg har alltid vært opptatt av miljøspørsmål. Ideen til denne mobilappen dukket opp for mer enn ti år siden. For å realisere ideen, fullførte jeg flere kurs i datavitenskap, Java-programmering og Android-applikasjonsprogrammering. I pappapermisjonen i 2017 programmerte jeg en rå prototype. Etterpå gikk jeg inn i en krevende lederstilling, mens jeg avsluttet doktorgraden. Etter jobb tilbringer jeg tid med familien min, og det er begrenset med tid for å programmere. Da jeg innså at jeg ikke kunne fullføre prosjektet alene, kontaktet jeg et universitet i Malmö, Sverige. I 2018 tok seks kompetente studenter av seg en forenklet versjon av prosjektet og produserte en Android-app med omtrent halvparten av funksjonaliteten. Nå er det på tide å henvende seg til fagfolk, og det er derfor jeg trenger din hjelp!

Pengene som samles inn, blir satt inn i den etisk topprangerte banken Cultura Bank. Alle pengene vil bli brukt til å engasjere et anerkjent selskap med profesjonelle programmerere i utviklingen av den foreslåtte mobilappen.
