Rainwater Tank for Kibera Kids
Kibera is not just the largest slum in Africa—it's one of the largest in the world, home to around 2 million people living in overcrowded conditions. Many residents live in shacks of just 13m², made of mud walls, corrugated iron roofs, and dirt or concrete floors. These tiny homes often house 8 or more people, with limited access to basic amenities. With 50 shacks sharing a single latrine and only a few homes having electricity, the challenges are overwhelming.
In Kibera, more than 40% of the population is under 15 years of age, and many children do not have the opportunity to attend school. They suffer from hunger and live in extreme poverty. One of the most critical issues is access to clean drinking water, a challenge that has led to numerous deaths from waterborne diseases.
This year, we are reaching out with a heartfelt appeal to provide clean, safe drinking water for the children in our community. We are raising funds to install a rainwater harvesting system next to our library, ensuring free access to safe drinking water for local children. This initiative will benefit over 15,000 residents. Through partnerships with local public schools, we aim to provide clean water, free from contamination and sewage-related diseases. Your support can help transform the health and well-being of our community’s children.
The funds we raise will cover the cost of the materials needed to build the system. All construction work will be carried out by our Local Volunteer Force, ensuring the project is community-driven. The system will be owned and managed by the community, ensuring its long-term sustainability.
Our goal is to raise $900 to purchase two 5,000-liter tanks. These tanks will provide access to clean drinking water for the children visiting the library and the wider community. This project will lay the groundwork for long-term solutions, empowering the community for years to come. By ensuring sustainable water access, we can help reach more vulnerable families.
These tanks represent more than just a material need—they are the foundation of a life-changing solution. Every donation, big or small, will go directly toward purchasing these essential tanks, meeting one of the community’s most urgent needs—access to clean water.
Your donation is more than just a contribution; it’s an opportunity to be part of something bigger. It’s a chance to make a direct impact on the lives of people working hard to build a better future for themselves and their children. With your help, we can make that future a reality.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting this life-changing project. Your generosity will make a world of difference.
Wishing you a fantastic year ahead, filled with joy, love, and warmth from The Watoto Community.
