Imagine living in silence — not because you were born that way, but because little by little, the sounds of life slipped away.

This is Najwa’s reality.

Najwa lives in Syria, a country already scarred by years of conflict, economic collapse, and hardship. She is in her 40s, and life has not been kind to her. She lost her eyesight as an adult, and more recently, her hearing has begun to fade too.

Now, the silence is almost complete.

Before losing her sight, Najwa had built a life around her deep love for history and culture. She studied archaeology and worked in a museum, a job she cherished with all her heart. Surrounded by ancient artifacts and stories from the past, she found joy and purpose every day. But after she lost her eyesight, Najwa was forced to give up the position she loved. Losing her job was not just about losing an income — it was about losing a part of her identity. Yet even after such a painful and sudden change, she refused to let go of her dreams for the future.

She has faced life-changing events that would have made many people give up on their dreams. But not Najwa. In her 40s, she made the courageous decision to return to high school, determined to earn the grades she needed to pursue her lifelong dream of studying psychology at university.

She relies on text-to-speech tools to study, to read, to chase the dream she refuses to give up. Without hearing aids, listening to her textbooks is slipping away, getting fainter by the day. Without hearing aids, her future fades with it.

But it’s more than her studies at risk.

Najwa longs to walk outside and hear the sounds around her — to stay safe, to feel connected. She dreams of sitting with her big, noisy, loving family without feeling lost and invisible in conversations.

She comes from a big, loving family — the kind of family where people talk over each other, where laughter fills the room, where children’s footsteps echo in every corner. But for Najwa, the lively chaos has become a wall of muffled sounds she can no longer reach.

She misses hearing laughter, stories, and the music of life that most of us take for granted. She misses simply feeling part of the world

Najwa needs the Phonak Lumity 90 UP hearing aids, which cost $1,040 USD. In Syria today, where a teacher's monthly salary is often less than $20, saving this amount is simply impossible for her or her family. No matter how hard they work or how much they sacrifice, they cannot reach this goal without outside help.

Najwa has medical papers documenting her hearing and vision impairments, and she is more than happy to share receipts once she purchases the hearing aids. Every dollar brings her closer to a world where she can study, connect, and live with dignity and independence.
